The central portion of the Cross is a form of the "Made Without Hands"
icon which is a face of Christ. Around this icon are symbols of the Four Evangelist: Mathew, Mark, Luke and John.
The
verso contains the Sweet Kissing Icon of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. Icons reflecting the tenderness between a Mother and Child were instrumental to the conversion of early Slavic Christians since they had very strong female gods. A prayer to the Virgin surrounds the icon.
