"Eleusa" (in Greek means showing mercy or Tender Mercy) is a type of Orthodox
icon of the Virgin Mary, which depicted with the Child
Jesus Christ. Usually infant Jesus is shown with His cheek touched to His mother's.
The Virgin of Vladimir is well known example of this type of icon, which is the most beloved
icons in all of Russia. The original icon is said to have been painted by St. Luke the Evanglist who actually saw the Virgin Mary in real life.
